Before you buy a shipping container

Use this checklist to compare offers for new, one-trip or used containers and put your requirements in writing before committing.

1. Start with the intended use

Tell the supplier whether the container is for stationary storage, cargo transport or conversion. Ask what condition and documentation are appropriate for that use. For a new or one-trip unit, request its trip history and current photos. If a seller uses a grade such as “B-grade”, ask for its written meaning for the actual unit.

2. Inspect the actual unit

Request the container number and current photos of the exterior, interior, floor, roof, doors and any repairs. Ask to see the doors opened and closed. Check the hinges, locking bars and seals, and agree an inspection where possible.

Record the agreed condition in the offer. Photos of a similar container do not establish the condition of the one you will receive.

3. Check the door opening and loading plan

Measure the widest and tallest item you need to load. Compare those measurements with the actual door opening and internal dimensions supplied for the unit. Include packaging, handling equipment and room for access in your plan.

4. Compare the complete quotation

Ask for the container price, VAT treatment, transport and offloading to be identified separately. Confirm the quoted size and condition, unit location, inspection arrangements, payment terms, quote validity and any exclusions.

For a modified unit, agree the work scope and drawings before comparing prices. Confirm availability and timing against the specific offer.

5. Agree delivery and placement

Provide the exact site location, access photos and preferred timing. Ask the transport provider to confirm vehicle access, overhead clearance, unloading method and placement requirements. Identify who supplies the lifting equipment and who prepares the placement area.

Confirm door orientation and space to open the doors before placement. Delivery and offloading arrangements must be agreed for your site.
